RIFLE. Cal 44-40. S#. 40917. Mfg. 1878. This rifle is fitted with a 24" round bbl with dovetailed brass blade sporting front sight and semi-buckhorn rear sight. It has the early type 2-line bbl address "WINCHESTERS-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT. / KINGS-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860". The dust cover is of the serrated edge type with screw attached guide rail. The upper tang is marked with the early "MODEL. 1873" marking. Straight grip walnut stock with trapdoor smooth crescent steel buttplate. CONDITION: overall fair. The metal surfaces have finish in the most protected of areas only with the balance having a smooth relatively even brown patina. Stock set has been refinished with added varnish. The forearm has some edge chips and deep dents and dings. The butt has some larger edge chips and loss with some heavy dents and handling marks. Bore has some frosting, pitting and some wear to the rifling. (01-28776/ZAL). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,250.
